A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Mother Mary, a  new drama starring Anne Hathaway as a world-famous pop star teetering on the edge of a major comeback. The film is slated to arrive in theaters on April 17, 2026, and features original music by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff.

Hathaway plays Mother Mary, an iconic singer grappling with an existential unraveling as she prepares to reclaim the stage. Her path leads her back to Sam Anselm, her former best friend and costume designer, portrayed by Michaela Coel, after a decade of separation. The trailer weaves together scenes of electrifying performances with tense moments from their long-overdue reunion.

“Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance,” the film’s synopsis states.

Directed and written by David Lowery, Mother Mary features a large ensemble cast that includes Hunter Schafer, FKA twigs, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, Kaia Gerber, Alba Baptista, and others. Lowery also served as a producer alongside Toby Halbrooks and several collaborators.
